There are three very important and secret vitamins that are critical for your health, yet they are usually overlooked. Do you know what they are? Here is a clue: They are always all around you, they are free and accessible all the time.
They are nature, fresh air and sunshine!
But first, why am I talking about nature, fresh air and sunshine as vitamins?
You are so used to taking your vitamins from a bottle you bought at the store, you forget all the vitamins that are around you and the resources you have to get them. They are everywhere!
Nature is full of vitamins, yet you are so busy in your office and your car and doing all the other indoor activities that you are required to do, you are not conditioned to go outside and look to nature for your vitamins.
Here are the three most important yet under-rated vitamins:
1. Vitamin N = Nature
2. Vitamin FA= Fresh Air
3. Vitamin S = Sunshine
Most adults spend their time indoors at their workplaces and dark living rooms, and kids today spend 7 hours more on academics and 2 hours less on sports and outdoor activities per week than they did 20 years ago. Unfortunately, all this indoor time is devastating your health!
Research shows that children who get more "vitamins N, FA and S” have lower stress levels, more success in school, and fewer ADHD symptoms. And adults who exercise and socialize more in nature are happier people all round.
You all know that just being in the sun makes your skin produce vitamin D, also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’. Low vitamin D levels have been linked with depression, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, osteoporosis and cancer.
You want to be outside at least 15-20 minutes each day without sunscreen to get your Vitamin D. Why without sunscreen? Because sunscreen (high and low SPF factors) stops the body from making vitamin D by 95 %. As you can see, it is very important to go outside in nature (VITAMIN N), get fresh air (VITAMIN FA) and sunshine (VITAMIN S)—these are critical forms of food for your body!
So, how can you get more Vitamin N, Vitamin FA and Vitamin S?
● Make outdoor adult play mandatory—splash in puddles, play in the park or pack a picnic.
● Take your work breaks outside. To avoid the typical 3pm slump, take a 10-15 min walk outside and drink in fresh air instead of coffee.
● Get in the Dirt! Try gardening. Getting your hands in the dirt is actually good for you—there’s a strain of bacterium in soil—Mycobacterium vaccae—that has been found to trigger the release of serotonin, which in turn elevates mood and decreases anxiety. Why do you think kids love dirt? They intuitively know that digging deep in dirt makes them happy!
● Cook outside—light your grill and create fun foods such as fruit kebobs. If you have kids, let them help by choosing special sauces for meats.
● Sleep under the stars—if you don’t like to camp out, put a tent up in your backyard.
